Mark Smith
Mark has a BCA degree from the Victoria University in New Zealand . He was ranked 8th in New Zealand at Squash which is where he first developed his passion for health and fitness.
Mark left New Zealand in 1986 with a position at Coopers Lybrand, in London. After a transfer to New York, Mark left the accounting firm to take up a club managers role with Town Sports International, a company that operated five fitness/squash centers at that time in New York City.
Mark was appointed Vice President of Development 1988 through to 1995 and was instrumental in the growth of the business taking it to 38 clubs mainly operating between New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington.
In 1995, Mark was appointed CEO of TSI and a year later executed a management buyout of the business which then enabled the organization to grow from 38 clubs to 140 in the next 10 year period. He was later appointed Chairman of the company.
Mark left TSI in 2006 to pursue private interests and upon his departure had grown the company to a turnover of over US $400 million and EBITDA of over US $100 million, 400,000 members and over 8,000 employees. Shortly after Mark left TSI the company was listed on the NASDAQ, and was ranked as the third biggest health club company in the US.
Mark resides currently in New Zealand with his family and is the majority shareholder of Cityfitness which currently has 16 fitness clubs located throughout New Zealand and is a founding partner in FitnFast, a rapidly expanding chain of fitness clubs in Australia.
Along with his strong business interests in Australasia he is also Chairman of Goodlife, a Canadian based fitness club chain with 260 clubs. It is the largest company in the industry that is under one individual's ownership. He also serves on the board of Les Mills International whose Group Exercise Classes are featured in over 13,000 fitness clubs worldwide. His industry contributions include serving for four years as a board member of IHRSA (the Fitness Industry Governing Body).
Ultimately one of Mark's fundamental philosophies is to "Never Ever Give Up" and that belief is one that drives his passion and commitment to maximum health and well being.
