Here at Calton Nutrition we formulate and manufacture the multivitamin nutreince. Because of this, we are very sensitive to any developments in the area of supplemental science, specifically where multivitamins are concerned. So, when the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) published its statement yesterday calling for the FDA to require multivitamin manufacturers to reformulate many of the most trusted multivitamins on the market we were intrigued. We wanted to know why the PCRM is urging the FDA to ban these well-known products and we thought you would too!

It turns out that almost all the big vitamin companies include the minerals copper and/or iron in their daily formulas. (We’ll wait here while you go get yours and check or review the chart below) Although copper and iron are both essential micronutrients, according to the PCRM, they should not be included in your multivitamin formulation based on research showing that even modestly elevated levels have been associated with impaired cognition, and Alzheimer’s disease.

When formulating nutreince we were already aware of this possible toxicity– so we left them out! We also eliminated these micronutrients because our research showed that copper competes for with 8, and iron with 10 different micronutrients for receptor sites in your body, respectively. Including these two minerals in a daily multivitamin would literally hinder the absorption and/or utilization of nearly all the other micronutrients in some way. We believe that these competitions may be responsible for copper and iron having been so strongly associated with impaired cognitive function and Alzheimer’s disease.

Neal Barnard, M.D., president of the Physicians Committee, stated in his letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, M.D. “Given that nearly half of Americans develop Alzheimer’s disease by age 85, we need to urge consumers to err on the side of caution… Research on the links between metals and brain damage is ongoing. Even so, the evidence that excess iron and copper contribute to brain deterioration has reached the point where we have to take it seriously.”

Now, stop for a minute. Don’t go throwing the baby out with the bathwater so to speak. Multivitamins themselves are not bad or dangerous. In fact, just the opposite—Taking a well-formulated multivitamin is one of the most important steps you can take to achieve micronutrient sufficiency – the basis for optimal health. However, if you daily multivitamin does include copper or iron and you are in the market for a new, properly formulated multivitamin, we invite you to explore the science behind nutreince– a copper and iron free, twice daily multivitamin drink mix with patented Anti-Competition Technology. To learn more about nutreince (Click Here)
