Labor Day became an official US holiday on June 28th 1894. Always occurring on the first Monday in September, Labor Day was first described as a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.” In short…the American worker. And while certainly many holidays hold greater esteem in the hearts of most, when you think about it, no other holiday really recognizes the single thing that makes up the foundation of this great country and truly of any great accomplishment – good old fashion HARD WORK!
This is why we love Labor Day!
Because, it’s a holiday that pays tribute to people who work hard, something we, here at Calton Nutrition, hold in very high esteem. It honors the men and women who get up each and every day and work hard to improve their lives and every aspect of our great nation. From our military, public officials, teachers, entrepreneurs, scientists, inventors, health professionals, construction workers, police, and firemen to our students, stay at home parents, grocery store clerks and coffee shop baristas, each and every hard working person is essential to improving our quality of life and moving our country forward.
But there is another side of Labor Day too. An aspect that perhaps wasn’t initially intended by the creators of this holiday, but one we think is equally important. Labor Day is also an opportunity for all of us to give ourselves a pat on the back for all the hard work we do in other areas of our lives too. Specifically all the time and effort you put into improving your health and accomplishing your personal goals and dreams – no matter what they are. It’s a time to remember the extraordinary power of hard work.
As you have probably noticed by now, this blog is a bit unusual for us in that it’s not a blog about the importance of achieving micronutrient sufficiency, but instead about some thing we consider to be just as important, the recognition of the hard work necessary to accomplish this goal, or any goal for that matter. Let’s face it, it’s one thing to dream about being healthy or accomplishing a life long goal and it’s a completely different thing to actually do it. Anyone who has accomplished anything in their live knows that it takes desire, drive, discipline and determination, day in and day out, to make your goals a reality. The bottom line is, achieving and maintaining optimal health is hard work; anyone who tells you differently is lying. Yes, there are tools that can help to make your journey easier and techniques that can make your efforts more productive, but in the end without labor, true labor, the kind of labor that most people run away from, most dreams never come true.
We also recognize that it takes team effort to achieve our goals. We most often do not get the job done alone. So, this labor day we want to celebrate your efforts and support your hard work in pursuit of optimal health. The great thing about hard work is that it ALWAYS pays off – Happy Labor Day!
